Kampala, Uganda – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) has held the 10th Utilities Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Conference at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The event brought together experts, stakeholders, and partners to discuss and demonstrate the transformative power of GIS in the utility sector.
Marking a decade of leveraging GIS for sustainable energy solutions, the conference showcased the strides made by the Energy Sector GIS Working Group (ESGWG) since its formation in 2011.
“GIS technology has proven indispensable for the strategic planning and effective management of Uganda’s energy resources,” said Hon. Okaasai Sidronious Opolot, Minister of State for Energy.
Breaking from tradition, the 10th-anniversary conference edition featured a highly interactive format, including hands-on workshops and demonstrations.
“We wanted to create a dynamic environment that informs but engages and equips our attendees with actionable insights,” noted Ministry Permanent Secretary Ms. Irene Bateebe.
A highlight of the event was the 2-hour interactive sessions led by partners and sponsors, focusing on real-world applications of GIS in energy management. These sessions included training on digital mapping tools, geospatial planning platforms, and a hands-on drone flying exercise.
The conference underscored the critical role of GIS in monitoring and implementing Uganda’s energy transition plans.
“GIS technology is the backbone for our data-driven decisions, ensuring equitable and adequate energy access for all Ugandans,” Hon. Okaasai emphasised.
The event also brought to light the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration.
“The utility sector can only achieve sustainable growth when there’s a free flow of data among all stakeholders—government agencies, private sector players, and utility companies,” said Ms Irene Bateebe.
Hon. Okaasai reiterated the need for ongoing and intensified data collection efforts to fuel informed decision-making. “The data collected will not only track the success of our projects but also help us pinpoint areas needing further development,” she added.
Founded in 2011, the ESGWG comprises GIS experts from key organizations within Uganda’s energy sector coordinated by MEMD. Participating institutions include the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL), Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (UETCL), Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (UEDCL), and UMEME Ltd.
