SmartLife Flexi – Retirement Savings Now Within Reach for Uganda’s Boda Rider, Farmer & Market Vendor

For years, Maria, a tailor in Ggaba, thought retirement savings were for “office workers with payslips.” Today, she saves for her future with coins from her daily earnings.

That shift is being driven by NSSF’s SmartLife Flexi Campaign – a nationwide push taking social security straight to Uganda’s grassroots.

Meeting Ugandans where they work
Over the last few months, NSSF teams have been on the ground in Omoro, Bududa, Sironko, Lira, Ggaba, Mubende, Kyegegwa, Kiryandongo, Kole and beyond.

They’ve met boda boda riders at stages, farmers at cooperatives, traders and market vendors at stalls, and artisans, mechanics, salonists, and tailors in their workshops. Through community barazas, market activations, and SACCO partnerships, thousands are now registering.

Saving on your terms, not a payslip’s terms
Unlike rigid monthly pension deductions, SmartLife Flexi lets informal workers save “when they have.” A boda rider can save Shs 2,000 on a good day. A farmer can top up after harvest.

“That flexibility removes the pressure,” says one vendor in Lira. “I don’t skip saving because I missed one week.”

More than registration: Financial literacy at the stall
NSSF is pairing sign-up with practical training: how to save consistently, manage fluctuating income, and plan beyond working years. The goal is to change the mindset that retirement planning is only for the formally employed.

“This initiative is about securing every Ugandan’s future,” says Dennis Marsha Kabuuka, NSSF Manager for Livelihood. “SmartLife Flexi brings social security closer to communities that have traditionally been left out. Every Ugandan deserves to build financial resilience.”

Why it matters now
With the informal sector employing the majority of Uganda’s workforce, SmartLife Flexi is expanding financial inclusion, building a culture of saving, and strengthening household resilience – one flexible contribution at a time.

The campaign’s message is simple: _Your future starts with the decision to save today._

Whether you’re in Arua or Kole, on a boda or behind a sewing machine, retirement is no longer out of reach.
