URA enforcement operation nets 70 cartons of cosmetics

The URA customs team in Mpondwe carried out a major enforcement operation that led to the seizure of more than 70 cartons of illicit skin-lightening cosmetics in Kabilizi Town, Kyondo Sub-county, Bukonjo West.

The three day operation was launched after surveillance indicated that smugglers were taking advantage of the porous borders.

Investigations revealed that the products were being transported to a suspected consolidation centre in Kabilizi Town, where they were temporarily stored before distribution to various markets.

During the operation, officers observed suspicious activities consistent with the receipt, storage, and redistribution of smuggled goods.

Once sufficient evidence had been gathered, the enforcement team cordoned off the premises and conducted a search. The operation resulted in the seizure of more than 70 cartons of illegal skin-lightening cosmetic products, including: Clairmen Cream (18 cartons), Cocopulp Cream (15), and Carolight Cream (37).

Robert Isabirye, supervisor of the Enforcement Midwestern region, hailed the team for their determination in the fight against the smuggling of unregulated cosmetic products, which pose risks to public health and undermine legitimate trade.

The products have been secured, and investigations are ongoing to identify individuals involved in the smuggling network.
