Inside the Launched Makerere University Strategic Plan 2025-2030

Launching the new Strategic Plan at Makerere University, Finance Minister   Hon. Henry Musasizi said Government is aware that sustainable economic transformation is fundamentally driven by knowledge, innovation, technology and human capital.

The Minister said Makerere’s Strategic plan rightly commits the University to optimize its research potential for national and global transformation, adding that the strategic plan comes at a defining moment when the country is pursuing its vision of growing the economy tenfold to USD 500 billion by 2040.

Musasizi commended Makerere for aligning its priorities with the fourth national development plan (NDP IV) and the Tenfold Growth Strategy.

“I would like to see Makerere increasingly support government decision-making through policy research and economic modelling. Government institutions require timely credible and locally generated evidence to guide policy reforms and investments,” said the Minister.

He pledged more support to the University through the Research and Innovations Fund, adding that the University must also continue to explore mechanisms to expand research financing, promote innovation ecosystems, support commercialization and strengthen University-industry collaboration.

Musasizi also made a passionate appeal to the University leadership to join in the fight against corruption by outrightly rejecting it at the University and instilling values in the students they teach. He said corruption is stifling service delivery in the country and must be stamped out.

The Vice Chancellor, Makerere University Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said the Strategic focus areas are: Teaching and learning; research and innovations; institutional engagement, partnership and community impact as well as institutional capacity.

“In the new strategic plan, we are making a bold commitment to reinforcing our identity as a research-driven, innovative, and globally competitive University,” said the Vice-Chancellor.

The Chairperson of the University Council Dr. Lorna Magara said the new strategic plan presents a pivotal opportunity to build on the gains of the past five years and accelerate the University’s transformation.
