In the heart of Teso, a land renowned for its resilience and cultural richness, there emerged a star in making, a leader by birth—a woman whose journey from the humble origins of a fishmonger’s daughter to a formidable force in Ugandan politics is nothing short of extraordinary.

Hon. Hellen Adoa Abeku, the Minister of State for Fisheries and the proud representative of Serere District’s women, embodies the spirit of tenacity, dedication, and servant leadership. Her story is not just a personal triumph but a testament to the power of education, community support, and unwavering resolve.
The Early Years: Humble Beginnings to High Aspirations
Born in Olep village, Kakuja Parish, Kyere in Serere district, Hellen Adoa’s upbringing was steeped in adversity. The third of nine children, she navigated the challenges of poverty and the aftermath of conflict that ravaged Teso with a resolve that would later define her leadership.
Her academic journey began at Kelim Primary School where mangoes and roasted cassava, potatoes were a serious meal through the day, continued through Ngora Girls Secondary School, and culminated at Ngora High School, where she earned her Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education.
Despite the odds, Adoa’s pursuit of knowledge was relentless. She went on to obtain two diplomas—one in Business Studies from Victoria Business Institute in Tororo and another in Education Management from Uganda Martyrs University. Her thirst for knowledge didn’t end there; she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Democracy and Development Studies and later, a Master’s in Local Governance and Human Rights, both from Uganda Martyrs University.
A Heart for Philanthropy: Building the Future
Adoa’s personal experiences, shaped by the struggles of her early life, ignited a deep passion for philanthropy. She devoted herself to uplifting the underprivileged, particularly in the realm of education—a sector she recognized as pivotal in breaking the cycle of poverty. With modest savings and support from friends, Adoa embarked on a mission to transform lives through education.
She established a network of schools across Teso, including Halcyon High School, Sunrise High School in Ocaapa, Halcyon High School in Serere, Teso Boarding Primary School, Toto Adoa Nursery & Primary School – Ocaapa. These institutions have become sanctuaries of learning, offering quality education and sponsorships to countless children, many of whom might otherwise have been left behind.
Adoa’s vision was clear: to create opportunities where none existed, ensuring that every child in Teso had a chance to succeed.
