The Lord Mayor of Kampala City His Worship Erias Lukwago has urged the beneficiaries of the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), a programme envisaged to increase participation of women in business development, increase their incomes, livelihood security and overall quality of life to use well the money as expected so that they can benefit from it.
Lukwago was meeting 37 Women Groups from across the five City Divisions of Kampala during a physical verification exercise of beneficiary Women Projects under the UWEP.
Lukwago informed the 271 beneficiary women that, with the new regulatory requirement from Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLD) for him to sign off files of each beneficiary group, it’s only prudent that he has a physical verification/interaction to ensure accountability and for the rightful beneficiary groups to receive the much needed funding.
‘’I encourage you to put the funds to good use, women are specially gifted with patience, a virtue required in entrepreneurship and am happy for the efforts towards economically empowering women’, noted Lukwago
He further reiterated his call for a policy change to turn the revolving fund in to a seed capital grant.
Nyanjura Doreen , the Deputy Lord Mayor who also heads the Gender docket at KCCA, called on the beneficiary Women Groups to ensure no woman member is left behind, most especially women with disabilities.
The 37 Women Projects are set to benefit from a disbursement of Shs.369M for FY 2024/2025.
Present at the engagement were members of City Executive Committee, Director of Gender Community Services and Production amongst others
