Global Steel Producer Tembo, Makerere University Conduct Career Guidance to Engineering Students

Uganda based Global Steel firm, Tembo Steels (U) Ltd, has in collaboration with the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology of Makerere University conducted motivational and career talks to learners of Mechanical Engineering.
The career guidance session was held on Wednesday 10th May 2023 at College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology auditorium in Uganda’s capital Kampala.
Mr  Sanjay Awasthi, the Chairman Tembo Steels (U) Ltd presented to learners the processes of steel production, company profile among other skills approach programmes that can transform students into a competent workforce.He was accompanied by Mr. Manish Kalla, the company’s General Manager,

“I would like to encourage you to work hard in class and further your education but also use the opportunities we offer to have practical skills. You may meet various challenges in life but that should not stop you from aiming high.We are open and available for whoever I am determined to gain skill and add efforts to the development of this country and the region,” Awasthi advised.

Awasthi who revealed to participants that Tembo Steels is the Most Diversified and Integrated Steel Plant in Africa with the Largest Product Portfolio through Integrated Route Covering All Four Verticals of Steel, said their company continuously strives to foster and develop talents across the country. He said the management recognizes the importance of training and giving opportunities to students, which is a noble contribution to the country.

On behalf of the University Prof. John Baptist Kirabira, the Chairman, department of mechanical engineering hailed Tembo for encouraging students to take a career in steel manufacturing related activities.
‘’We request support from the government and the private sector in the infrastructure for training and research .We need equipment where students can be able to access demonstrations ,scientific research and related infrastructure for training lecturers, better lecture rooms, labs and internet among others ‘’, said Kirabira.
He added that for the private sector, their role is to assist them as partners in the practical training of the students because they are supposed to work in the industries.

‘’The training we have here just qualifies them for a first degree but they can do more training in the industry. The opportunity in Tembo opens more gates for our students to have access to equipment we don’t have here, skills and also our collaboration in research especially in the steel manufacturing and steel control in the manufacture of skill. All these are part of mechanical engineering and we are encouraging this partnership because we have an industrial partner .We are really happy for this partnership’’, added Kirabira.
The meeting was also attended by Dr.Abubaker Matovu Waswa, the Head, department of electrical and computer engineering who doubles as the acting dean of engineering. Another University official was Eng.Dr.Peter Olupot, a senior lecturer in the department of mechanical engineering, who recently led the students on a guided tour of the two Tembo Steels Plants.
Students were given an opportunity during the question and answer session to pose inquiries and get clarification from the Tembo team about the market, environment, leadership, technologies and production processes at the company.
