Honorable Sanjay Tanna was on Wednesday, 10th June, 2026 sworn in by Parliament, sealing the appointment process and confirming him as the new Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives.
This appointment that has received countrywide acclaim places Tanna in the books of History as the first Ugandan of Indian descent to serve in Cabinet as full Minister with a Portfolio.
The two Ugandans of Indian descent that served in high profile government positions were N.M. Patel who held the position of Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from 1963 until January 1971. He made history as the first non-European to hold the role, serving throughout the First Republic until Idi Amin dissolved the legislature.
The second was Shafiq Arain who was a Cabinet Minister and diplomat in the Obote II government. He however, had no portfolio.
Following the overthrow of Idi Amin’s regime Arain served as a prominent government minister and held a key diplomatic post as Uganda’s High Commissioner to London (to the Court of St. James).
Prior to the 1970s, Arain was heavily involved in the East African Community, serving as a Minister in-charge of the East African Railways, before going into exile.
Significance of Tanna’s Appointment
Hon. Sanjay Tanna has not only been appointed Minister but Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives. This suits his business experience, acumen and a ‘dyed in the wool’ hobby-investing in ventures that are viable.
