Supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a civic organization headed by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba have embraced the candidacy of Mr Daniel Kananura Damazo who is vying for Kira Municipality , currently represented by Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda.
During a consultative meeting held at the Ruts cafe & Lounge in Namugongo , Kira Municipality , Wakiso District attended by various stakeholders , Kananura , a renowned businessman and politician told supporters that it is time the area to have focused leader , trans-formative and who can work with government to solve the challenges in the municipality.
“We need to unite as people of the NRM and PLU in Kira municipality. Let us work as a team to win. We are a very strong party and as leaders, we should act as an example to the rest of the party members. Speaking to Journalists shortly after the meeting , PLU’s Kananura said the NRM has managed to sail Uganda through the most violent and turbulent storms in the country’s history adding that through this time, NRM has been tried, tested and found worthy of continued leadership of this country .
He added that in collaboration with PLU , the government is determined to create more Wealth and Jobs; Deliver Education and Health; Ensure Justice and Equity; Protect Life and Property and Achieve Economic and Political Integration among others.
‘’The mantle of securing the future of Uganda is so great a task for one to play bets on. It is not a gamble. It is a matter which requires lifelong commitment, unending sacrifice and vast experience. NRM and PLU can be trusted with the sacred responsibility of securing Uganda’s future’’, added Kananura.
Despite Kira being moderately developed , stakeholders who attended the meeting shared the challenges affecting Kira including; rapid urbanization , Poor infrastructure, Waste management, Environmental issues, Poverty among some communities, poor housing, Unemployment, deteriorating water quality among others.
‘’ We understand an MP can not do these things because we know the roles of MPs majorly in legislation and oversight , but they lobby from both government and private sector. Also as Kira we have been lacking a channel from government to communities. We need leaders who can work with government and other stakeholders to transform our area’’, noted one of the participants.
Prior to graduating with a Master’s degree in Procurement and Supply Chain Management from Makerere University last year, Kananura is also pursuing a law degree in one of the prominent universities in the country. An ardent supporter of the NRM and Gen.Muhoozi, Kananura a procurement consultant and renowned businessman, celebrated for his advanced mobilization skills, which prompted his appointment to the office of the Kira Municipality mobiliser for PLU.
He previously contested in Kashari North Constituency, in Mbarara District and is an advocate for Infrastructure Development (road links), fully functionalized healthcare system, Ideological Orientation of the Young Turks, realignment of Education Policy and restructuring, women and youth empowerment, electrification among other programs .
Late last year , Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, clarified that members of the Patriotic Liberation Union (PLU) are free to contest for parliamentary seats, emphasizing that the PLU is a civic organization, not a political party. He urged those with political ambitions to align with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), which he regards as the party whose values most closely reflect those of the PLU.
His statement clarified the loyalty of PLU supporters to the NRM when he affirmed that his focus remains on strengthening the party and supporting its values.
Muhoozi’s message to PLU members reflected his stance on maintaining cohesion within Uganda’s political landscape, particularly within the NRM, which has been the ruling party under President Museveni . While the PLU has emerged as a significant civic organization, advocating for political and social reforms, Muhoozi’s statement served to ensure that members with political aspirations remain aligned with the NRM.
By advising PLU members to contest under the NRM umbrella, Muhoozi underscores the party’s historical significance and its alignment with the values of unity, stability, and progress that he believes the PLU shares. The NRM has been central to Uganda’s governance since the end of the 1980s, and Muhoozi’s call is likely aimed at preserving this continuity.
