MTN Uganda honors Dr. Babra Ofwono for accelerating women empowerment

MTN Uganda has honored Dr. Babra Ofwono, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Victorious Education Services (VES), for her outstanding contributions to women’s empowerment, particularly in education and leadership. The recognition took place as part of the telecom company’s Women’s Month celebrations, which seek to spotlight female leaders driving societal change.

Speaking during the courtesy visit at the institution’s main home on Namirembe Road on Thursday, MTN Uganda’s GM Enterprise Business Unit, Ibrahim Senyonga, commended Dr. Ofwono’s dedication to fostering leadership among women.

“Empowering women is a shared responsibility, and MTN Uganda recognizes the vital role Dr. Ofwono is playing in this regard. Your work is not only transforming education but also creating opportunities for young women to thrive,” he said.

Dr. Ofwono, in her remarks, welcomed the recognition and emphasized the importance of mentorship and support in women’s leadership.

“Women face significant challenges in rising to top positions. Many organizations require board members to be CEOs, yet female CEOs remain few. If we do not actively support women in leadership, the gap will persist,” she noted.

She further highlighted the broader impact of empowerment initiatives, stressing that lifting one woman has a multiplying effect on the community.

“What MTN is doing is not just about me—it’s about inspiring many others to step up, find their purpose, and contribute meaningfully,” she added.

Dr. Ofwono reflected on her own experiences, explaining that her journey in education began from a personal passion rather than a business mindset. Facing rejection from traditional schools, she turned to the private sector, where she saw an opportunity to make a difference. Today, Victorious Education Services, which started in 1999, has expanded to five campuses and a sixth one offering services online with over 5,000 pupils.

She also spoke on the need for inclusive hiring practices, saying that experience should not be a limiting factor for young graduates. “If we don’t give fresh graduates a chance, who will? At Victorious, we invest in young talent and train them to become skilled professionals,” she said.

MTN Uganda reiterated its commitment to advancing gender equality and pledged continued collaboration with partners like Dr. Ofwono to break barriers for women in business and leadership.
