Sheehan Standard PS Rubaga Celebrates Women’s day with a Call for ‘Responsible Child Raising’
Parents and stakeholders of Sheehan Standard Primary School in Rubaga Division, Uganda’s capital Kampala were excited on Monday 10th March 2025 as the school held an enlightening Women’s Day.

The International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March, commemorating women’s fight for equality and liberation along with the women’s rights movement focusing on issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Uganda held the celebrations at Bukwiri village in Kyankwanzi district last Saturday.

Sheehan Standard Primary School decided to hold the celebrations on Monday when all students, especially day scholars were available, with an aim of helping children develop empathy, understanding, and have a sense of responsibility for gender equality.

Speaking to journalists during the celebrations, Mr Kizito Joseph, the head teacher of the school said marking this day promotes respect by helping students learn about the contributions and struggles of women, and develop respect for their achievements; Breaks down stereotypes where Children can learn to recognize and challenge traditional gender norms; Empowers girls by highlighting the achievements of women in a variety of fields, girls can be inspired to pursue their own passions; Raises awareness where children can learn about the ongoing gender disparities that still exist in society; but also encourages action by enabling children to learn to advocate for change and create a more inclusive society.

Kizito hailed the Ugandan government for promoting women rights and appointing them in key positions in the cabinet for the next five years. In the cabinet, women took the top positions with four of the top five having women including Jessica Alupo (Vice President), Robinah Nabbanja (Prime Minister), Rebecca Kadaga(First deputy premier) and Lukia Nakadama (third deputy premier) and the speaker of parliament who was elected by MPs but secoded by the ruling NRM party top organs, Anita Among.

Several activities were held to celebrate the women’s day including teachers performing to students, games and pupils performing both cultural and modern melodies
Sheehan Standard Primary School is considered Rubaga’s academic giant. The institution often projects their academic prowess in the examinations and is among the best primary schools in Kampala. The institution is private and accommodates boys and girls. It also accepts day scholars and offers a holistic approach to education and places equal emphasis on academics, sports, music, drama and arts.
