Schools, Public Flock St Kizito High School for 7th Green Expo & Fish Festival

St Kizito High School Namugongo hosted its annual 7th Green Expo & Fish attended by students from various institutions, alumni, parents, and well-wishers in a lively celebration of innovation, aquaculture and practical skills development on the school grounds.

The festival, part of the school’s end-of-year program, is designed to showcase the hands-on learning initiatives that have become integral to the student’s education beyond traditional classroom activities.

Learners showcased student-led projects in Energy (waste to briquettes, briquette oven technology, solar drying technology), Smart farming (solar irrigation, modern mushroom farming, smart poultry, black soldier-fly rearing, modern fish farming, vertical gardening, etc), Circular economy & (Innovative food waste processing into animal feeds, plastic waste reuse,) Green IT solutions, smart irrigation software and many more.

Among the dignitaries who attended the Expo includes; Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu a Senior Presidential Advisor and former Minister of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), His Worship Allan Bulamu Dentine the Mayor of Kira Municipality ,

The head teacher of the school, Mr. Kazibwe Ezekiel says they are nurturing future doctors, engineers, and teachers who can use practical skills and make a difference and support communities.

Through these projects, students have been educated on income-generating skills and environmental conservation, particularly as they transform waste materials into sustainable charcoal, promoting awareness about eco-friendly practices and reducing deforestation.

The festival made a day filled with cultural performances, demonstrations, and a unique focus on the benefits of innovation.

The school invested in its own fish ponds, allowing students to learn the fundamentals of aquaculture, including the nutritional benefits of fish and the importance of sustainable fish farming. This approach not only equips students with practical skills but also broadens their understanding of food production and self-sustainability.

The fish served at the festival is entirely sourced from the school’s ponds, a testament to the hard work and dedication of students who have carefully raised and nurtured the fish under the guidance of their teachers.

The festival attracted teachers, students, parents, and school supporters from across the region. Attendees also enjoyed student performances, cultural dances, and acts from guest entertainers, creating an atmosphere of excitement and community spirit.

As a unique school initiative, the Expo not only celebrates the students’ hard work and learning achievements but also serves as a model for other schools to integrate practical skill-building into their curricula.

St Kizito High School initiatives offer a glimpse into the promising future of Uganda’s youth as they develop valuable skills to empower themselves and uplift their communities.

During the expo, students said such activities at the school help them acquire knowledge and skills which will help them transform their communities. Under agro-waste and municipal waste projects, students get waste or rubbish and turn it into charcoal. They do this to advocate and sensitise people about environment conservation, keeping it green as well as de-campaigning deforestation.
