Uganda is mourning the death of retired Supreme Court Justice and esteemed legal scholar Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba.

He passed away at Nakasero Hospital, where he had reportedly been receiving intensive care.

The news of his death was confirmed by his family member.

“Yes, he’s gone to be with the Lord,” said a source.

Prof. Kanyeihamba had been admitted in critical condition at the hospital.

The family is expected to announce the cause of death.

Prof. Kanyeihamba, a towering figure in Uganda’s legal and academic community, was renowned for his unwavering commitment to the rule of law, constitutionalism, and human rights.

He served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda and was one of the framers of the 1995 Constitution.

Throughout his judicial career, he was celebrated for his independence and integrity, frequently authoring dissenting judgments that emphasized legal ethics and civil liberties.

Beyond the bench, Prof. Kanyeihamba was a prolific author and educator.

He taught law at Makerere University and authored several books on constitutional and international law.

His academic influence extended across Africa, and he was often called upon to offer legal commentary on matters of national interest.

He also served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and represented Uganda at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

He was widely regarded as a conscience of the judiciary, never hesitating to speak out against injustice, even in retirement.

His passing marks the end of an era for Uganda’s legal profession and civic thought leadership.
