FDC Clarifies on the Party President Erias Lukwago’s Message Distorted by NewVision
FULL STATEMENT
CLARIFICATION ON OUR STATEMENT ABOUT THE NAM CONFERENCE AS CARRIED IN THE NEW VISION EDITORIAL.
This is in respect to Editorial Item appearing in the New Publication of Saturday January 13, 2024 titled “NAM Summit: Political parties should emulate FDC call”
The article inter alia mentions that “FDC noted, 55% of the World’s population belongs to NAM, something the Party described as an opportunity the Country needs to fully exploit, rallying Ugandans to be ready to reap the benefits that come with the summit “
In this correction, we would like to clarify as follows:
The FDC President Erias Lukwago noted that once again NAM/G77 + China Summit is a missed opportunity to showcase Uganda, adding that just as was with previous conferences like CHOGM, the organization of such meetings is often riddled with acts of corruption and scandals, with NAM being of no exception.
The FDC President also observed that the infrastructure rehabilitation “NAM Roads” budgeted for have not been implemented, with the Kampala flyover project (funded by JICA) a long term City Project currently being misleadingly showcased as NAM infrastructure were as not, he decried the manner in which residents along the corridor leading to Munyonyo Conference Centre are being treated; forced to beautify frontage of their premises, with other businesses completely shut down.
He showed concern owing to history, on how government will recoup the public funds invested in a private enterprise at Munyonyo Resort.
He further observed that the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) founded in 1961 did so well in the fight for Independence and against Apartheid in South Africa, however he added for NAM to remain relevant it must be refocused to address current challenges in member Countries such as democracy and human rights abuses.
Please take the above information on record.
