Gov’t in Talks with the Republic of Türkiye over 87 Detained Ugandans

The government of Uganda says its commitment to continue engaging with the relevant Turkish authorities to find a mutually acceptable solution to address 87 Ugandan Nationals detained in the Republic of T~rkiye .

In a statement dated August 25, 2023, Mr. Vincent Waiswa Bagiire the ministry’s permanent secretary says together with the Uganda Embassy in Turkey, they have visited 6 detention centres.

‘’The Ministry together with the Uganda Embassy in  Ankara-T~rkiye is seized  of  the  matter  and  has  so   far   undertaken   Consular  visits  to  6 detention centres namely;  Harmandali,  Silvre,  Tuzla,  Erzurum 1, Erzurum

2, and Edirne to offer the necessary Consular and legal assistance required’’, reads the statement in part.

According to Bagiire,  a  total  of  87   Ugandans  have  been identified and  confirmed  by   the  Officials of  the  Ugandan  Embassy  in T~rkiye to have been detained  by  the Turkish Authorities  due to overstay of  their visas  which is  in  breach of  the Immigration  regulations  of  the Republic of T~rkiye.

‘’The Ministry wishes to assure the general public of its commitment to continue engaging with the relevant Turkish authorities to find a mutually acceptable solution to address these concerns and the affected families will be updated in due course’’, further reads the statement.

The Ministry also urged all Ugandan Nationals to abide by the

Immigration regulations of the host countries they reside in.
